Up for a night that’s nothing short of presidential?

As part of the lead-up to the 2015 World Grand Final for the BACARDÍ Legacy Global Cocktail Competition, the fabled rum brand is partnering with Sydney’s acclaimed bar The Roosevelt to bring cocktail enthusiasts, mixology aficionados or simply fans of a great drink a one-time-only experience like none other.

On Sunday April 26, The Roosevelt will be hosting an intimate evening with two of the BACARDÍ family’s leading lights – the first is José Sánchez Gavito, who has been a Maestro de Ron BACARDÍ (a master rum blender) for over 35 years within the company, and the second is Enrique Comas, Global Brand Manager and sixth-generation descendant of BACARDÍ’s founder/creator, Don Facundo Bacardi Massó. The idea to provide an event that was open to the public arose out of the word-of-mouth success of BACARDÍ’s media and bartenders-only Belief Sessions in which both men originally participated.

As some of Sydney’s top mixologists prepare great drinks – including many of Senor Gavito and Senor Comas’ favourite recipes – the two old friends will share intimate anecdotes and lead a journey through the rich, colourful history of the BACARDÍ dynasty – from surviving famine, earthquakes, wars and near bankruptcy to their eventual emergence as the world’s most beloved rum.

Participants will also enjoy a special mouth-watering menu created by The Roosevelt’s Head Chef Adam Lord, perfectly designed to complement the BACARDÍ rum range.

The night is a precursor to the 2015 world grand finale of BACARDÍ Legacy Global Cocktail Competition, which will be held on Sunday May 3 at Sydney Town Hall.

Heritage

Opened in 1947 by Abe Saffron, the Roosevelt in Potts Point was the most successful and infamous club in Australia. It brought a touch of Hollywood to town, with wonderfully produced shows, the likes of which had not been seen in Sydney; Sammy Davis Jr, Ella Fitzgerald and Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra were flown in to perform. The club became the most important stop for Sydney’s elite, including politicians, high-ranking police and judges. Early photos show Australia’s high society in attendance; the men dressed in double-breasted suits and hats and the ladies in evening gowns and furs. It was all glitz and glamour. The Roosevelt employed many interesting characters, including doormen and bouncers who became underworld figures. Abe Saffron had an ingenious solution to the problem of the prohibition of the sale of alcohol after 6pm; have the Roosevelt patrons place an order before the deadline and serve them their drinks later.

In addition to the booze available many a guest, male & female, came to the Roosevelt to quench their thirst for sex and gamling.

In 1954, the royal comission into liquor trading conducted by the NSW Police Commisioner, declared the Roosevelt a ‘disorderly house’, guilty of various breaches in alcohol law. Saffron was forced to give up his licence and sell the Roosevelt (the venue was allowed to reopen once the new owners took over). Over the past six decades the Roosevelt has undergone multiple reincarnations & name changes, including a radio station and has been the home to various international restaurants.
